Great Hanggliding and Paragliding area in the German alps
Allgäu / Bavaria
General information for pilots and pedestrians
Fantastic view from mountain top. Let your eyes rest
on the great panorama of the Allgäu lakes on the front side
and the alps from Gruenten to Zugspitze (highest german mountain,
aprox.:9000 ft) on the other side.
hiking: You'll find lots of very well set up hiking
trails. Some of them are real easy to walk along , others are
somewhat more pro-like.
from Munich or Augsburg through Peiting, Steingaden (B17)
from Ulm-Kempten (Freeway A7) through Füssen
from Kaufbeuren through Marktoberdorf, Füssen (B16)
at Schwangau follow the signs to Tegelbergbahn. Nearest railway station: Füssen; there is a bus line
to Tegelberg.
Licences: German limited pilot licence or equivilant
( Hang III, SoPi etc.) and valid insurance. Hangliding pilots
have to pay a landing fee of 3 €,- per day. (buy at lift cashier)
Paraglider pilots do need a site-advisory document signed by an
approved local teacher
Infrastructure: Large cabin lift ( 44 pers., max. 4
gliders per ride, no length limitation) Lift runs very frequently
from 9 am to 5 pm. Plenty of setup space ( approx.: 30 gliders
and 10 paraglider) at same time. Setup and takeoff very close
to liftstation. Landing area just a few hundred feet from lift.
Sitecharacteristics: The NW- lengthside of Tegelberg
is directed against the wide open flatland. The upper half of
Tegelberg is quite rough and rocky. So you'll find lots of thermal
activ spots.
Spring, summer, early fall: Thermal activities along the
whole mountainside, most interesting spots within gliderange.
Time before noon ist fine for smooth training flights, best time
for thermal flights is the afternoon.
late fall, winter: You still may find flyable thermals
on the southern side.
Under normal weather conditions this flying site doesen't take
a lot of pilot skill (Paragliders do need a solid takeoff technic
due to ramp takeoff). Taking normal precautions this mountain
is quite a safe place for the aviatic - enthusiasts
Take Off: 1720 m ( 5200 ft) above SL, Two ramps , 300
degree and 60 degree, both of them very well sized . Most of the
time the wind will be frontal at the latest by noon. Except those
days with strong non-regional winds from SE - SW
As a rule: After set up you should take off soon. Both
, hang- and paragliders get hooked in before they get on the ramp.
Most of the time you'll find a helping hand if needed.
other takeoffs: for teaching purposes only
Landing field:830 m (2500 ft), large and usually non-turbulent.
Wind normaly 20 to 60 degree (check WINDSOCK ) . Never land headed
NW, landing field is tangled that direction. If NW or SW winds
become stronger there's other landing areas (strongly reccomended)
Alway use a classic landing approach (downwind, crosswind, headwind
). Hangliders start their downwind approach on the valleyside,
paragliders on the mountainside. Please don't cross street on
final lower than 30 ft. (Bus traffic)
